World Youth Day: 22-28 July
In the first of our UK pilgrims’ audio reports from WYD Rio, Catherine Anderson, 27, from Westminster Diocese gives us a taste of what the atmosphere was like on Copacabana beach for the Opening Mass and Ceremony with the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro.
“Being in Rio is magical – we’re experiencing what the Church in Latin America is really like.
“The atmosphere at the Opening Mass on Copacabana beach was overwhelming and just so electric. You could see the love and friendship of other pilgrims who wanted to take photos together, swap national souvenirs… There was a blaze of flags along the beach as far as the eye could see.”
“I’m looking forward to these coming days….I’m enjoying every moment and the events with the Pope will be even better.”

For those young people unable to travel to Rio, there are ‘WYD @ home’ events. There is one in the north and one in the south – the ‘Rio comes to Kent’ Brightlights festival is at Aylesford Priory and ‘Rio’s coming to Castlerigg’ is in Keswick, Cumbria. Both promise to be the next best thing to Rio this summer.
