5 March 2021
The World Day of Prayer, formerly the Women’s World Day of Prayer, is the largest, global, women-led ecumenical movement. The initiative, led by Christian women, encourages us to join in prayer and action for peace and justice.
Every year on the first Friday of March, a service is celebrated which different countries take turns to write.
The theme for 2021 is Building on a Strong Foundation.
This year all the services are online. Find a UK service on the site for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The 2021 service has been written by the women of Vanuatu, a Y-shaped archipelago 2,000 miles east of northern Australia. Vanuatu was struck by natural disaster, Cyclone Harold, in April 2020. On top of this, the tourist industry, which is a main source of income for about 25% of the islands, has been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
