During the weekdays and Saturdays of Lent, we’re bringing you daily podcasts from the Gospel of John – “the disciple whom Jesus loved”. Starting with an introduction from Canon Christopher Thomas on Shrove Tuesday, ‘Reading John in Lent’ starts in earnest on Ash Wednesday with John 1: 1-18, telling us how “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” – Jesus Christ, the only Son from the Father. We then follow the Gospel through all 22 chapters concluding on the Friday of Easter Week. Join us as for ‘Reading John in Lent’. Taken from the English Standard Version of the Bible.

Today we listen to all of Chapter 9. It’s the story of Jesus healing the man born blind.
The Jews question the man and ask whether he wants to become one of Jesus’s disciples:
“Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”

Jesus tells the Jews who believe in him that the truth will set them free.
He says to the Jews who seek to kill him: “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.”
He tells the doubters they are of the devil and says “Before Abraham was, I am.”

It was the Feast of Booths and the Jews were seeking to kill Jesus. Not even his brothers, his disciples, believed in him so Jesus said to them:
“My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.”

The Jews grumble about Jesus for saying he is “the bread that came down from heaven.” Harder still for them to fathom, Jesus says that the bread that he gives for the life of the world is his flesh.
“For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.”

This reading from John sees the authority of the Son affirmed. Jesus says to the Jews:
“For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honour the Son, just as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him.”
