The liturgy is the source and the summit of the Church’s life. Through the liturgy the Church offers a living sacrifice of praise to God and so receives the grace to be the light of the world and to glorify the Father in the eyes of all. The Church’s liturgy consists of the Mass, the Sacraments and other rites, and daily prayer. Since the Second Vatican Council these rites have been revised in the light of sound tradition and that they be given new vigour to meet the circumstances and needs of life today. The rites were initially issued in Latin and have since been translated into English and other languages. Since the Council the rites have been revised in the light of experience and so that when translated more fully reflect the faith and practice of the Church.
The Liturgy Committee assists the Department in the review of liturgical texts, and the reflection on matters of good practice. The Formation Subcommittee is concerned with liturgical formation and the development of liturgical ministry.
Each year in February the Formation Subcommittee meets with representatives from diocesan liturgy commissions of England and Wales. The meeting will share reports and prepare for future liturgical initiatives. The meetings provide an opportunity for dioceses to reflect on the formation for the introduction of the Roman Missal and look at the celebration of the Easter Triduum.
