World Mission Sunday – the one day in the year when the entire global Church comes together in support of mission – will happen on 20 October 2024.
World Mission Sunday is observed annually on the second to last Sunday of October, and this year it falls on October 20th. It is a day when Catholics around the world come together in prayer, solidarity, and support for the Church’s mission work.
The theme for this year, selected by Pope Francis, is inspired by the Gospel of Matthew: “Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet.” This theme emphasises the call to share God’s love with everyone. Join us in this global mission to spread the Gospel and invite everyone to experience the joy of Christ’s message!
Father Anthony Chantry joins us for this ‘Catholic News’ podcast to discuss World Mission Sunday. Celebrated on the penultimate Sunday of October, it’s a chance to support missionaries and the churches, hospitals and schools where they do the Lord’s work, in countries where the Church is new, young or poor.
Fr Chantry is the National Director of Missio, the Pope’s official charity for world mission.
Kibera, Kenya, is the biggest urban slum in Africa. It’s rife with all the problems poverty brings – malnourishment; addiction; abuse. But missionary Sister Mary meets the challenges of life in Kibera with faith and friendship.
In his message for World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis is inspired by the story of the disciples on the way to Emmaus.
