As well as the Canonisation itself, there are a number of free-to-attend events in Rome - celebration concerts, a prayer vigil and an academic symposium.

The Thomistic Institute at the Angelicum University is holding a one-day symposium on Saturday, 12 October, titled ‘Newman the Prophet: A Saint for Our Times’. On the eve of his canonisation, we will pray for the intercession of John Henry Newman. Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham will preside invoking the prayers of the new Saint-to-be for all those gathered in the church, and their intentions. Mrs Melissa Villalobos is attending. Maria experienced profuse bleeding during one of her pregnancies and was healed by the intercession of Cardinal Newman. This miracle was the final step in the cause for Newman’s elevation to sainthood. Register here.

John Henry Newman will be made a saint by Pope Francis. Cardinal Newman is the first English person who has lived since the 17th century officially to be recognised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. A Mass of Thanksgiving will take place on Monday, 14 October at the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano – also known as the Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in the Lateran.
