Bishop Declan Lang is co-signatory of a letter in The Times today which highlights that this year will provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity for progress on new goals for sustainable development and a new climate treaty.
Sir, This year will provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity: in September world leaders decide on new goals for sustainable development and in December a new climate treaty.
Global agreements matter. The millennium development goals helped to halve the proportion of people living on less than $1.25 per day and enabled impressive gains in primary education and child survival.
We have a long way to go: too many people are still burdened by hunger and disease, too many children do not see their 5th birthday, too many face conflict. We stand together to build a movement for change. Stand with us and urge our leaders to do all they can to make this year a year of action.
