The Columban Missionary Society has launched a schools’ competition to encourage students aged between 14-18 to use their media skills to engage with an issue that addresses equality, justice, inclusion and also draws on faith and personal experience.
‘Let’s Create a World Without Racism’ is the competition’s theme and is particularly pertinent in a year that has seen global protests calling for racial justice after high profile killings such as that of George Floyd in the United States.
At the time, Pope Francis said:
“We cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism and exclusion in any form and yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life.”
Young people in the UK and Ireland have raised their voices on this important issue taking to the streets to promote an end to racism.
The Columban competition for young people, in its fourth year, focuses on a topic that is relevant to today’s society and resonates with Catholic Social Teaching. Past themes include migrantion, climate change and issues surrounding our ‘throwaway culture’. A core aspect of Columban mission is crossing boundaries of language, race, culture and religion.
The competition is open for written and image-based entries until 20 February 2021 and there are cash prizes for winners.
Judges from the world of Catholic journalism include Ruth Gledhill of The Tablet and Nick Benson of The Universe, joining James Trewby, the Columban Education Worker.
