Government announces increased funds and staffing levels for most dangerous prisons
Bishop Richard Moth today welcomed the government’s announcement of extra resource for prisons.
Secretary of State for Justice Liz Truss announced the government’s intention to put £14m for 400 staff in the most dangerous prisons at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham. The minister also confirmed that the Prison Reform Bill will come before parliament early next year.
Bishop Moth said he looked forward to working with the government on prison reform.
“I am very encouraged by the announcement of extra funding to help tackle the urgent crisis of understaffing in our prisons and confirmation that the government will bring forward its Prison Reform Bill early next year.
“As Cardinal Nichols recently expressed, the Catholic Church stands ready to partner the government in transforming prisons, drawing on the wealth of expertise from Catholic chaplains, charities and volunteers who work in every prison throughout England and Wales.
“I look forward to working with the Secretary of State and her team to help make our prison system benefit the Common Good of all our society.”
