Bishop Declan Lang, Chair of the Department for International Affairs, has welcomed the release of Nicaraguan Bishops Rolando Alvarez, Bishop of Matagalpa, and Isidoro Mora, Bishop of Siuna.
Fifteen priests and two seminarians who were held in detention in Nicaragua have also been released into the care of the Vatican.
Bishop Declan Lang said:
“Pope Francis, in his address to the Diplomatic Corps, reminded us of the deeply troubling situation facing the Church in Nicaragua.
“I very much welcome the news of the release of Bishop Alvarez and Bishop Mora along with 17 other representatives of the Catholic Church.
“Let us sustain our prayers for all the people of Nicaragua, particularly those who strive to uphold human dignity and social justice.”
