Bishop Richard Moth, lead Bishop for prisons has responded to the government takeover of HMP Birmingham from G4S:
“The government takeover of HMP Birmingham has demonstrated that this prison is not fit for purpose in its current state. Pressures on prison resources and personnel are amongst the factors that have brought about this situation. It must be hoped that the new arrangements for HMP Birmingham will bring about the changes necessary for both inmates and staff. There are a number of institutions across the prison estate where much still needs to be done to assure the safety and well-being of prison populations and surrounding communities.”
