In Rome over the weekend, on 4 October, it was announced that Pope Francis has accepted the resignation from office of the Rt Rev Kieran Conry, former Bishop of Arundel and Brighton.
With the diocese now sede vacante – without a bishop – the Holy Father has appointed the Most Rev Peter Smith, Archbishop of Southwark, as Apostolic Administrator of that diocese until such time as a new bishop takes up the office of Diocesan Bishop.
This temporary role is in addition to Archbishop Smith’s duties as the Archbishop of Southwark, and he will continue to live and work at Archbishop’s House while providing support to the people and clergy of Arundel and Brighton.
