A former BBC Commissioning Editor gave the 2011 World Communications Day lecture at Westminster’s Allen Hall Seminary last night (23 May).
Jacquie Hughes, who commissioned innovative series like The Monastery and The Big Silence, talked about the global digital revolution and the inevitable power shift from the journalist to the user – the content creator.
“Anyone with something as simple as a mobile phone can broadcast anything to the world, 24/7 and the idea of ‘owning’ the story is history,” she says. “This represents a huge challenge to all of us, and one that journalists and programme makers and those in traditional media wrestle with all the time. What becomes of what we do in this world?”
The lecture followed a Mass at the Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer and St. Thomas More in Chelsea. Bishop George Stack, Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster and Archbishop-elect of Cardiff, was the chief celebrant. Fr Dominic Howarth, Chair of CYMFed, the Catholic Youth Ministry Federation for England and Wales, gave the homily.
