Communications professionals from across the media spectrum gathered on 5 June for a special Mass and lecture to mark the recently celebrated World Communications Day.
It was the first public engagement for the Rt Rev Nicholas Hudson since his Episcopal Ordination as Westminster’s new Auxiliary Bishop and took place at Heythrop College, the University of London’s philosophy and theology college.
Fr Stephen Wang, Senior University Chaplain for the diocese, focused his homily on St Boniface – whose feast day coincided with the celebration.
St Boniface, a Devon man born around 675 in Crediton, was known as ‘the Apostle of Germany’ – a monk and teacher who became a missionary bringing Christianity to northern and central Germany and Holland.
He spent his life preaching, baptising and founding monasteries and communities. He died a martyr around 80 years old.
Fr Stephen holds St Boniface up as an exemplary communicator who left what was familiar and comfortable and took the Gospel message to new lands and cultures.

Monsignor Paul Tighe, Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, gave this year’s World Communications Day lecture at Heythrop College in London on 5 June 2014. Mgr Tighe’s lecture provided an engaging and thorough analysis of ‘The Church in a Digital World’.
