Rt Rev John Wilson, Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster

The Right Reverend John Wilson is an Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Westminster.

He was born in Sheffield on 4 July 1968 and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Leeds on 29 July 1995.

Bishop John studied at the University of Leeds before starting his formation for the priesthood in 1989 at the Venerable English College in Rome.

He completed a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and obtained a Licence in Moral Theology at the Accademia Alfonsiana.

After his priestly ordaination, he served as an assistant priest at St Joseph’s, Pontefract (1995-1998) and then at St Joseph’s, Bradford (1998-1999).

Bishop John has also been a hospital, hospice, prison and school chaplain.

From 1999-2005, he was a lecturer in moral theology at St Cuthbert’s Seminary, Ushaw College, Durham and served as Vice Rector.

He was Episcopal Vicar for Evangelisation in the Diocese of Leeds from 2005-2012 during which time he was named a Chaplain to His Holiness by Pope Benedict XVI in May 2011.

He was parish priest of St Martin de Porres, Wakefield before being appointed an Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster by Pope Francis on 24 November 2015 with the Titular See of Lindisfarne.
